About Charles Bridge
Charles Bridge (Karluv most) to Prague is like the the Colosseum to Rome or the Eiffel Tower to Paris. The bridge connects two parts of Prague: Old Town district (Staré Město) and the Lesser Town (also known as Little Quarter, Mala Strana). Mala Strana is full of old houses, ornamented with shields and emblems, located on the slopes right under the Prague Castle. It has been founded in 1257, and it offers a great panorama of the Vltatva and the other side of the river. The center of Lesser Town is the Little Side square (Malostranske namesti), with the magnificent St. Nicholas Cathedral dominating the square. The Old Town district is the first district, the original place of settlement of Prague.

Charles bridge is the oldest bridge of Prague (construction began in 1357 and ended in early 15th century), and it was the only bridg until 1841. It is made of Bohemian sandstone and it has been preserved in a relatively good shape. Earlier, a wooden bridge and a stone bridge stood in its place. The stone bridge was named Judith bridge after the wife of king Vladislav I, but a big flood ruined it and a new one had to be built in its place. The present bridge is 516 meters long, almost 9,5 meters wide, and has been constructed on the command of King Charles IV.

Importance of Charles Bridge
Charles Bridge does not only bind Lesser Town and Old Town, but it also has a strategic importance. It is protected by towers (2 on the Lesser Town side, 1 on the Old Town side) in order to block enemies from marching into the city freely. In addition to its military role, it has been a rather popular promenade for the public and a section of the royal path, where during the crowning process, Czech kings walked from Vysehrad to the Hradcany.

Statues and Statuaries
The 30 baroque statue ornaments, which have made Charles bridge so famous, are not the original masterpieces because those have been removed due to decay. They originated from the late 17th century and the early 18th century, and have been replaced by replicas during the sixties and seventies to preserve the appearance and atmosphere of the bridge. The statues depict saints and patron saints from those times, made by the well-known Boheamian artists like Ferdinand Maxmilian, Jan Brokoff, Matthias Braun and Michael Joseph.
